The new 12.9-inch iPad Pro, introduced by Apple earlier this week, will not be compatible with the previous generation Magic Keyboard. As funny as it sounds, the reason is the slightly increased thickness of the device.
Citing a document provided by the Apple Store, iGeneration notes that the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro is 0.5mm thicker than its predecessor. However, this seemingly insignificant increase in thickness will prevent the keyboard-mounted case from closing properly. The Magic Keyboard will probably work, but it will not work as a full-fledged case. Thus, in a switch to a newer device, users will have to purchase a new keyboard case. Note that the 11-inch iPad Pro will remain compatible with the previous generation keyboard as its dimensions have not changed.
The new 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M1 PC processor, 5G support, and Mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display in the larger model will be available for pre-order starting April 30. However, their deliveries will begin no earlier than the second half of May.
