Sony sold twice as many PlayStation 5s in the first quarter as Microsoft sold Xbox Series X and S

Many were left with no choice during the pandemic but to seek entertainment within their own home, and many found a solution in video games. This is indirectly evidenced by the statistics of sales of game consoles. According to the available data, sales of entertainment electronics have grown markedly despite the global shortage of microchips.

Nintendo Switch became the absolute bestseller. According to statistics from the consulting company Ampere Analysis, 5.86 million copies were sold in the first quarter of 2021, 12% more than in the same period last year.

At the same time, experts do not exclude stagnation in the second quarter, since at the beginning of the year, sales were influenced by the almost global need to stay at home and the active promotion of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which pushed sales up.

It is noteworthy that the consoles of the next-generation PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and X together sold worse than the Nintendo product. At the same time, Sony sold more than twice as many consoles as its direct competitor Microsoft. According to experts, for the first quarter, 2.83 million copies of the PlayStation 5 were sold against 1.31 million copies of the Xbox Series S and X combined.

Sony’s leadership may continue in the future, as happened with the previous generation consoles.
