If you’ve been using VMware Workstation, ESXi, or vSphere for a while, you probably have a dump of old virtual machines sitting on your host, test environments, decommissioned servers, and cloned VMs. Most techies simply delete and move on. However, this is a mistake as it increases the risk of data leakage.
Deleting a Virtual Machine does not wipe the data stored within it. The VMDK (or VHDX, if you’re using Hyper-V) files, snapshots, and swap files are often recoverable from the underlying datastore or the host disk long after the VM has been removed from your VMware panel. If the VM ever had customer records, credentials, licensing keys, or proprietary source code, the data is still there, waiting to be recovered by anyone using data recovery software.

Why “Delete VM” Isn’t the Same as Erasing VM
When you delete a VM in VMware Workstation here’s what actually happens:
- The VM is removed from the inventory list.
- Depending on the option you chose (“Remove from Inventory” vs. “Delete from Disk”), the underlying files may or may not be removed from the datastore.
- Even when files are deleted, the blocks on the physical storage aren’t overwritten; they’re just marked as available space.
That last point is the important one. Just like deleting a file from your desktop, deleting a VM just removes the pointer to the data, not the data itself. Depending on the condition of the underlying storage, forensic or data recovery tools may be able to recover portions or complete virtual disk files, potentially exposing operating system files, application data, cached credentials, and other sensitive information.

- Retiring old employee VMs — Desktop VMs used for remote work often have personal files, saved passwords, and browser data.
- Repurposing a host or datastore for a new client or project, especially in shared hosting or MSP environments.
- Cloud or On-prem migration cleanup, where old VM copies linger after a migration completes.
