Step 1: Download the Kali Linux ISO

  1. Visit the official Kali Linux Downloads page.
  2. Select the x86_64 version (for 64-bit Windows systems) or the Apple-specific version if using macOS.
  1. Click the download link for the Installer Image (approx. 4.1GB). Ensure you have sufficient storage.

Step 2: Install and Configure VirtualBox

  1. Install VirtualBox:
    • Run the downloaded VirtualBox installer and follow the on-screen prompts.
    • Install the VirtualBox Extension Pack for added functionality (e.g., USB support).

Here is a complete video tutorial that you can follow.

  1. Create a New Virtual Machine:
    • Open VirtualBox and click New.
  • Name the VM (e.g., “Kali Linux”).
  • Choose a location to store the VM files (default is fine, but you can change it if needed).
  • Select the ISO Image option and browse to the downloaded Kali Linux 2025.1A ISO file.
  • Allocate Hardware Resources:
    • RAM: Assign at least 2GB (stay within the green bar for safety).
  • CPU Cores: Assign 2 cores for smoother performance.
  • Hard Disk: Select Create a virtual hard disk now > VDI > Dynamically allocated. Allocate 20GB of space and click on finish.

Step 3: Start Kali Linux Installation

  1. Select the newly created Kali Linux virtual machine and click Start.
  1. When prompted, choose Graphical Install.
  1. Select your language, location, and keyboard layout.
  1. Configure network settings:
    • Enter a hostname (default is fine, or customize it as needed).
  • Skip the domain name configuration.
  1. Set up a user account:
    • Enter your full name and username.
  • Create and confirm a strong password.

Step 4: Disk Partitioning

  1. Choose Guided – Use Entire Disk.
  1. Select the virtual hard disk created earlier.
  1. Select All files in one partition (recommended).
  1. Confirm by selecting Finish partitioning and write changes to the disk.
  1. Choose Yes to proceed with writing changes.

Step 5: Install Kali Linux

  1. The installation will now begin and may take several minutes.
  1. When prompted for the desktop environment, choose default settings.
  1. Install the GRUB boot loader:
    • Select Yes to install GRUB.

Step 6: Complete Installation & Reboot

  1. Once the installation is complete, click Continue.
  1. The system will restart and boot into Kali Linux.
  2. At the login screen, enter the username and password you set earlier.
  1. You are now inside your Kali Linux virtual machine.

Step 7: Optimize the Virtual Machine

  1. Expand the display:
    • Go to View > Full-Screen Mode.
  • Click Switch to maximize the screen. If you want to revert back, press the right ctrl key with F on your keyboard.
