Production will start in the first half of 2021!
Foxconn is relocating part of its iPad and MacBook production from China to Vietnam at Apple’s request. This was reported to Reuters by a person familiar with Foxconn’s plans. So Apple seeks to diversify production to minimize the impact on it of the Sino-American trade war.
American companies are urged to relocate production from China by the US presidential administration, trying to stifle the Chinese electronics industry by increasing import duties and restricting the supply of components made using American technologies under the pretext of national security concerns. Taiwanese manufacturers, fearing involvement in a trade war, have already moved or are considering transferring some of their production from China to Vietnam, Mexico, and India.
Foxconn is building assembly lines for Apple iPads and MacBooks at its factory in northeast Vietnam, according to an anonymous whistleblower. Production will start in the first half of 2021. Part of orders from China will be transferred to these lines.
Taiwan-based Foxconn declined to comment on the post, but this week it announced a $ 270 million investment to set up a new subsidiary, FuKang Technology, in Vietnam. According to unofficial reports, Foxconn also plans to manufacture TVs in Vietnam for Sony. Their release may begin at the end of this year or early in the future.
Reuters previously reported that Foxconn plans to spend up to $ 1 billion to expand its iPhone assembly plant in India, as Apple “urged” it to diversify production outside China.
