Developer Hector Martin announces Patreon funding for bringing native Linux to M1 Macs

Apple’s new SoC M1 PCs have certainly made a splash in the PC market. Moreover, this is not just noise – quite possibly, this is the beginning of a new PC era.

In any case, for many, such computers will not work simply because they run macOS. Most people are used to Windows, but there are quite a few Linux fans.

Yesterday, Hector Martin, known for his Linux ports on various devices, announced that he had begun a project to port Linux to Apple’s Silicon Mac. To do this, Martin launched a Patreon campaign. The developer focuses on the fact that he wants to create not a technical demo but a full-fledged working port. Of course, the project will be open source and available on GitHub

As part of the Patreon campaign, several plans are available from $3 to $48 per month. Interestingly, at first, no one will pay anything, even if they subscribe to the project.

Since this is a large-scale project, it makes no sense to start small. If I can devote a little time to it, then nothing will be done in time to catch up with Apple’s hardware release cycle. So this Patreon pauses. No one will pay until the monthly bond amount reaches $4,000. At this level, I can guarantee that the investment of time will pay off.

At the moment, the project has already collected 29% of the required funds. The developer also promises that he will document the process and periodically conduct live broadcasts.
