Chrome consumes 13x more memory on Apple computers with new macOS than Safari

The test showed that under normal conditions, the Chrome browser uses 13 times more RAM than Safari on macOS Big Sur.

The developer of the Flotato application conducted the tests. He tested both browsers in two scenarios on the latest macOS. The first test was conducted in a virtual machine and the second on a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM. The first test simulated a typical browser scenario: opening Twitter, scrolling, then opening a new tab with Gmail and composing an email.

It turned out that Chrome uses 1 GB of RAM to solve these problems, while Safari only uses 80 MB. With 54 tabs open, Chrome used 24x more memory per tab than Safari. Simultaneously, both browsers did not include any extensions, and this test was already carried out on a real laptop.
