Apple’s new MagSafe charging for iPhone 12 turns out to be very slow

iPhone 12 with 15W MagSafe charger charges twice as slow as with 20W wired adapter

Joanna Stern from the Wall Street Journal has published a review of the iPhone 12 smartphone, which raises various questions, in particular, the charging speed of the smartphone when using different chargers.

In testing, the MagSafe charger actually charges iPhone 12 faster than the traditional 7.5W Qi wireless charger. This is not surprising, given that Apple MagSafe has a claimed maximum charging power of 15W.

However, when using a proprietary Apple USB-C adapter connected via a wire, the charging speed was much faster. In this case, the power of wired charging is 20 watts. Anker wireless charger also took part in the testing.

In the bottom line, these adapters charge iPhone 12 from 0 to 50% for:

  • MagSafe – 1 hour
  • Anker – 1.5 hours
  • 20 watt wired charging – 28 minutes
