Apple has released a new OS – Most significant design update since Mac OS X

MacOS Big Sur with iOS design released

Apple has announced the release of its new operating system for computers – macOS Big Sur.

The stable version of macOS Big Sur became available to ordinary users after several months of testing, which started after the announcement at the June WWDC 2020 Apple Developers Conference.

The OS brings a new design, refined and improved Safari, Messages and Maps, increased protection of personal data. What users will not notice, but makes big changes to the OS itself, is support for the new Apple M1 chip on ARM architecture, in addition to support for x64 architecture (and, accordingly, Intel processors).

Of course, third-party developers will have to try to ensure that their applications are fully compatible with the new Apple computers based on the Apple M1. However, Apple made sure – macOS Big Sur has a built-in Rosetta 2 emulator for applications that have not yet been updated to Universal format. Apple promises that Rosetta 2 will provide full functionality for such applications.

The design of macOS Big Sur has become similar to mobile iOS. According to the developers, this is the most significant design update since the release of Mac OS X. The Big Sur version for the first time brings to macOS such an element as the Control Center (Control Center), familiar to the iOS user, for quick access to controls directly from the desktop. table.

MacOS Big Sur is available for free installation on these computers:

  • MacBook Air (2013 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (2013 or newer)
  • Mac mini (2014 or newer)
