Air pollution in China due to iPhone 12

Zhengzhou City is also known as “iPhone City” and is a key production site for iPhone!

The new iPhone 12 does not come with a power supply and headphones, as Apple has decided, according to company representatives, to reduce emissions and protect the environment.

However, according to a report by Morgan Stanley, air quality data in some cities in China show air quality declines associated with the production of the iPhone 12. A report released by analysts at a financial institution showed that various cities, including Zhengzhou, experienced a sharp increase in industrial production, which led to a corresponding decrease in air quality. Zhengzhou City is also known as the “iPhone City” and is a key production site for the iPhone. The factory in the city is owned by Foxconn and has been featured in recent years for poor working conditions.

The document says the air quality data was sourced from a non-profit platform that collects and publishes air quality data in China. According to the European Space Agency, they tracked levels of nitrogen dioxide, which is a “first-level indicator of industrial activity” in four cities.

Nitrogen dioxide is one of the gaseous pollutants that contribute to other air pollutants such as ozone and particulate matter. It is also harmful to the lungs and can worsen asthma attacks.

Other cities where air quality has also deteriorated are Shenzhen and Chengdu. In the first, production increased in early September, while Chengdu’s industrial activity has increased in recent days.
Apple is forecast to ship between 230 million and 240 million new phones in 2021, making the iPhone 12 the company’s most popular phone ever.
