A Christmas present from Apple: App Store commission cut in half ahead of schedule

The change was supposed to take effect on January 1!

In November, Apple officially announced that all developers who made less than $1 million in a year from app sales and in-app purchases in the App Store will pay Apple 15% commission instead of the standard 30%.

Earlier this week, Apple began e-mailing eligible developers with information about their acceptance into the program, noting that a reduced commission rate of 15% will take effect by January 1, 2021. However, Apple has decided to make a Christmas present, some developers have already confirmed that a 15% rate applies to their earnings.

Developers who have confirmed the fee reduction include David Hodge, creator of Tesla Nikola’s car app for iPhone, and Jacob Gorban, developer of ImageFramer’s photo editing app for Mac.

For developers who exceed the $ 1 million threshold, Apple’s standard 30% commission still applies. This drew criticism from well-known companies. Spotify said Apple’s board change demonstrates that “App Store policies are arbitrary and capricious,” while Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said Apple is “tricking the community with a patchwork quilt of special offers.” Basecamp CTO David Heinemeier Hansson said Apple is trying to “make any developer who makes more than $ 1 million as greedy.”
